Celebrating the state flower of New Hampshire

The purple lilac was adopted as the state flower of New Hampshire in 1919. That year, many bills and amendments were introduced promoting the apple blossom, purple aster, wood lily, and even the buttercup as the state flower. Long and lively debates followed regarding the relative merits of each flower, but the purple lilac was ultimately chosen to symbolize the "hardy character of the men and women of the Granite State."
